Government Documents: HeinOnline, GovInfo, and IDS Search

Use one of database links at the bottom to find government documents:

Group 1 Find government documents about Yellowstone National Park that were published before 1940.  

Group 2 Find federal government documents about genetically modified foods. 

Group 3 Find New York State government documents about lead poisoning that were published before 1970.

Group 4 Find congressional hearings on pesticides that were held after 2004.

Group 5 Find federal statistics on the use of agricultural chemicals and their effect on the environment. 

Group 6 Find documents published between 1970 and 1990 about U.S. regulations regarding release of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) by corporations.

Group 7 Find the earliest government document you can find about the appropriate technology movement. 

Group 8 Find the earliest government document you can find on wind power.

Congressional Record

Use the Congressional Record in HeinOnline to find the following materials:

 Group 1 In the Congressional Record for 1956, find congressional comments on the opposition (protests) to using atomic energy, especially those made by Adlai Stephenson.  Also search for comments about the testing of radiation’s effect on the human body and the environment.

Group 2 In the Congressional Record for the early 1960s, find entries on congressional actions regarding pesticides, and any mention of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring the year it was published, 1962.

Group 3 In the Congressional Record, find entries about the Water Quality Improvement Act and the Solid Waste Disposal Act, 1965 and after.

Group 4 In the Congressional Record, find entries about the legislation regarding the public’s “right to know” about emergency handling of chemicals, around 1986. 

Group 5 In the Congressional Record, find entries about the Exxon Valdez oil spill, 1989. Did the legislature take any action regarding the disaster?

Group 6 In the Congressional Record for 1990, find entries about the Clean Air Act amendment which  revised the Clean Air Act of 1963.  (Governs the use of ethanol.)

Group 7  In the Congressional Record, find the remarks made in the Senate by Senator Mike Mansfield in the 1950s on the topic of the future of nuclear weapons. Was this address for or against nuclear weapons?

Group 8 In the Congressional Record for 1955, find the remarks made on the floor of senate about cutting timber in public parks (public lands).  Who made them and what was the speech about?

Group 9 In the Congressional Record for 1954, there were remarks made in the House about a bill (H.R. 9585) to establish a policy to conserve water.  Who made the remarks and what were the details of the policy?
